Very good sound and quality
|

I purchased this saxophone for my son. It has been 4 months now, he is learning and playing. The teacher said it is a good choice for beginners and makes of it a very good deal for quality/price.
The instrument itself is very pretty, sound is very good and clear (and loud too!). You will need however to buy a better cleaning swab.
I definitely recommend it. Very good price (you can find cheaper ones, but the quality is really poor compare to this Suzuki Saxo). I think it is perfect for beginners or for people not sure of which instrument they want to learn. |

I am a band teacher specializing in woodwinds from Kansas City, KS. I have been teaching all woodwinds (clarinet, saxophone, flute, oboe and bassoon) for more than 10 years. This review is intended as general advice for all musical instruments globally. Please be an informed consumer before you purchase any musical instrument and accessories.
General considerations about musical instruments: Up-front cost, overall quality, long-term (repair) costs, instrument life and repairability.
The best advice I can give you is to make use of your local music stores and get advice from a professional who has hands on experience with these instruments. There are reasons that store carry specific brands. They are of known quality and value. They give a balance between quality of materials, construction/craftsmanship and cost. They last over time.
Questions to ask about an instrument:
-What is it made of? A clarinet or oboe can be made of plastic, wood or a composite. A saxophone should be made of metal, a brass, bronze or silver with lacquer (black and clear are common). A flute should be made of silver (not silver plated). The keys should be made of metal not plastic. Felts and corks should pad the mechanisms. Key pads can be leather or synthetic.
-What features does it have? Additional features may include different key alignments, additional keys for higher or lower notes, silver keys, nickel keys.
-What does it cost? A quality musical instrument will cost some money up front, but also last many, many years. Over time any instrument will need regular maintenance to continue to play well. This can be less than $50 per year to several hundred dollars depending on initial quality and how it is cared for. A cheap instrument will not stay in good condition as well as a better quality instrument. Many repair shops will not repair low quality instruments at all because they can not guarantee the work on it. Often when a problem occurs on a less expensive instrument the whole instrument is trashed. A better quality instrument that is well cared for will cost less money over time.
-How does it sound? Instrument sound is effected by many things including the person playing it. In the hands of a skilled musician, the other differences can be easily heard. No beginner instrument will sound as good as a professional instrument, however, many will never produce a good, characteristic sound. Select an instrument that you have heard in person or have had personally recommended by a professional. A better quality instrument will last an developing player through many more years as they develop a better sound. It would be a shame to limit a student's ability because of an inferior instrument that will never produce a characteristic sound.
The good news: This instrument will not cost much right now and may last a year or two if well cared for. How well will the student take care of this instrument?
The bad news: The life expectancy of this instrument is limited and it is likely that if something goes wrong it will not be repairable. In a year or two this instrument will likely need to be replaced for repair reasons. In a year or two this instrument will likely need to be replaced so the student can continue to develop as a musician.
Alternatives: Your local music shop likely offers a rent-to-buy program that will have a monthly rental fee that will pay off the cost of the instrument over time. If the student decides not to continue to play, the contract is simply terminated at the end of the month and you have not paid for an instrument that will not be used. A good beginning instrument can last a beginning elementary school student all the way through high school.
I can not and will not say, "Do not buy this instrument," it may be a great choice for you. I think there are other options that are likely better. The best thing you can do is talk to a professional in your area and get hands on advice. |

Great packaging- Impressive case- Impressive looking-
but substandard quality. It simply does not play in tune. Suzkuki needs to works on the intonation of this model. I feel like my $ is used for Fluff instead of
quality control and design.
Bottom Line- stay away |
Very Satisfied with this Saxophone

| The reason I decided to purchase this saxophone is because the school wanted the parents to rent them for $50 a month(with an option to buy). Having been in band myself I know the quality of the typical rental instrument is medicore (plus they have been used) I figured out that I would actually spend more for the rental than this one. Plus I feel the Suzuki is a higher quality. It arrived in perfect condition, the case is beautiful with a good sized space for reeds, etc. We've had it six months and no problems. I bought it for my son, but I was able to try it myself as I have played both clarinet and saxophone. The tone is excellent. |

| This item is not the quality I expected from the Suzuki company. It is made in China. Spoke to my childs band teacher because the Sax would not hold a note, she said that it will never work properly and it is difficult to repair. Save your money and buy a good product. When I got it it looked as if a few of the keys had already been repaired, or attempted to be repaired. They used wood chips or something to try to piece it back together. Speak to your childs band teacher before buying it he/she may not be as excited as you are. My son has been playing the saxophone for 3 years now he thought the case and the sax looked very good he even said "mom it all looks good but it plays like crap." Be careful because if you buy it from Amazon and then discover all the flaws that I did and choose to send it back because it doesn't work or is already broken Amazon will not provide a full refund. You are better off renting to own from a professional music store where professionals are able to help you pick an sax that is right for you, not only that you are able to see instrument as well as play it before purchase. My sons old rented used Veto Saxophone played 100 times better than the Suzuki mainly because this Suzuki didn't play at all. I am very disappointed with the Saxophone that we received as well as with the refund that Amazon has agreed to provide. I have been a customer with Amazon for many years and can say that this purchase alone will prevent me from ordering from them ever again. |
